Recession? What Recession?

My daughter runs her own business, providing a service for some high end clients, many of them household names. And she has been able to beat the recession and increase sales dramatically, these past 12 months.

So she wasn't too surprised to see this year's shopping list of Christmas presents for clients had more than doubled. That, in turn, has delighted the owners of the little Mom and Pop Italian delicatessen, who supply all these goodies.

And here's the interesting bit. The delicatessen owners also supply other businesses with their client's Christmas presents. But - virtually without exception - all of them have drastically scaled back their purchases, this year.

So, my daughter's marketing efforts have helped the delicatessen owners too. When the tide comes in, all the boats rise. That's the right way to beat the recession.

So what is so special about my daughter? Simply that she has been brought up from a very early age with my old sales manager's favorite mantra: "Nothing happens until somebody sells something" ringing in her ears.

So, whilst other less enlightened companies, run by parsimonious bean-counters, are being "sensible"... "drawing in their horns"... "waiting for the recession to end", my daughter - as the Chief Marketing Officer of her company - is out there in the cold-calling trenches, stealing their business, getting the orders they could have had, if only the marketing department hadn't been suicidally "downsized".

So, don't wait for the bacchanalian orgy that is New Year's Eve. Make your key resolution for 2010 now.

The right way to beat the recession is to increase sales by making marketing the red-hot core of your business, even if that means "downsizing" the non-productive and obstructive bean-counters. Then enjoy the ride as your dreams for more sales, greater wealth and a better life take off.
